Elven Lembas Bread (Tolkien-Inspired Travel Bread)

Prep Time: 15 minutes | ⏳ Bake Time: 25 minutes | 🍽️ Servings: 12 squares

Description:

Straight from the legendary kitchens of Rivendell, Lembas Bread is the Elvish waybread featured in The Lord of the Rings. Traditionally, one small bite is enough to sustain a traveler for days—while ours may not have quite that effect, it’s a delicious, lightly sweet, and hearty biscuit-like bread. With a crisp golden exterior and a soft, dense center, this honey-oat creation is the perfect adventure snack for fantasy lovers! 🏹🌿🍞

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup oat flour (or finely ground oats)
  • 1/3 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for warmth)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream or milk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flours, salt, baking powder, and cinnamon.
  3. Blend the Butter & Honey: In a separate bowl, cream together butter, honey, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Form the Dough: Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry, adding cream/milk slowly until a dough forms.
  5. Shape & Cut: Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch thick square. Using a knife, cut into 4-inch squares, then lightly score a diagonal cross on each piece (to resemble Elven markings).
  6. Bake: Transfer to the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and firm.
  7. Cool & Serve: Let cool completely before serving or wrapping in leaves (or parchment paper) for an authentic look!

Serving Suggestions & Variations:

  • Enjoy with fruit preserves or nut butter for extra flavor.
  • Add finely chopped nuts or dried fruit for texture.
  • Swap butter for coconut oil to make it dairy-free.
